Dateline Malinao: Typhoon Frank (Fengsheng)
13 photos · 8 Jul 2008
On June 21, 2008, Typhoon Frank hit the Philippines. One of the hardest hit provinces is my home province of Aklan. After the typhoon in the morning, a flash flood and mud flow from the Aklan River occurred damaging the towns along the river: Libacao, Madalag, Banga, Malinao, Lezo, Numancia and Kalibo. The capital town of Kalibo was the most devastated, because it is located at the mouth of the Aklan River and serves as its catch basin. This album is a collection of photos taken in Malinao during and after the flood and the subsequent relief operations. They are from cell phones of Malinaonons - the Mayor and Gina Perez who is the municipal registrar.

Memories of Aklan

My home province in the Philippines.
In June 2008, most of the province was devastated by Typhoon Frank, particularly the towns along the Aklan River, including my hometown of Malinao. Recovery will take months but Aklan will survive. This album is dedicated to the resilient Aklanons, both in Aklan and outside of it.

The Faces of Ati-atihan
44 photos · 6 Jun 2008
Pot shots of Ati-atihan participants. The Kalibo Ati-atihan is considered to be the mother of all Philippine street festivals that pay homage to the Sto. Nino (the Child Jesus) and the Aeta (Ati), the original inhabitants of Panay, the island where Kalibo is. Photos were taken in Kalibo and in Malinao, another town in Aklan where the Ati-atihan is celebrated.

La Mesa Ecopark
9 photos · 14 Jun 2009
From the La Mesa Ecopark website: La Mesa Watershed in Quezon City is the primary source of drinking water of about 12 million Metro Manila residents. The property is owned by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), a government agency. La Mesa Watershed is 2700 hectares, 700 hectares of which is the reservoir and 2000 hectares of which is the surrounding forest. This forest is the last remaining one of its size in Metro Manila and serves as its carbon dioxide sink. La Mesa Watershed, therefore, is vital to the city, not only because it is a primary source of drinking water, but also because its forest functions as the lungs of Metro Manila, providing it with clean air.

Day Trip to Guimaras
18 photos · 8 Jul 2008
The island province of Guimaras is just an hour or so away by pump boat from Iloilo City. In 2006, on a lark, we drove from Aklan to Iloilo City and when we were there decided to go to Guimaras for a short visit. We were actually there only for about an hour and a half, hired a jeepney to take us around and then went back to Iloilo late afternoon.

Echoes of Bohol
16 photos · 8 Jul 2008
Bohol is an island province in Central Visayas about two hours or so away from Cebu City by ferry. It’s an upcoming tourist destination. In 2006, we were in Cebu City and decided to do a day trip to Bohol to see the Chocolate Hills and the tarsiers. We loved Bohol so much that we decided to go back and stay there in 2007. Also, when my agent saw my tarsier and Chocolate Hills photographs, he asked me to take more of them, wherever I took them. I probably will go back there again and again.

Boracay Through The Years
15 photos · 14 Jun 2009
I have been visiting Boracay since 1977 (when there weren’t any commercial cottages then). I was in college then, an uncle knew someone who had property there so, on his tip, we went. The house where we stayed (owned by the Aguirres) is no longer there, but the caretaker (Mang Ome) who used to live next door now owns a sprawling complex called BAN’S.
